SESSION 1 - September 19, 2026 - From Conflict to Connection: Managing Expectations and Roles in Caregiving (virtual)
Session 1 Description:
Hear from a panel talking about how to manage when caring for someone who may resist help from you or others, when expectations don't match reality, and when you need to set limits within caregiving.
When Nita’s father was diagnosed with dementia, she stepped into the role of a caregiver. A journey shaped not only by her father's decline but also by her family's generational history of dementia. Supporting her father both in India and from abroad while living in the United States gave her a rare, cross-cultural perspective on the realities of caregiving.
Passionate about equipping others with the resources she once sought, Nita has become a dedicated advocate for dementia care. She leads support groups, part of the Alzheimer's Advocacy group to work with the congress to make policy changes, and contributes to awareness events like the Walk to End Alzheimer's. Collaborates with ARDSI (Alzheimer's and Related Disorders Society of India), Calcutta, to advance caregiving solutions with technology. Her book Hold My Hand As The Memory Fades is a beacon of hope and guidance for families navigating the painful, confusing, yet profoundly human journey of dementia.
Nita Sharma
CANHR
California Advocates for Nursing Home Reform (CANHR), is a statewide nonprofit advocacy organization, dedicated to improving the choices, care, and quality of life for California’s long-term care consumers for over 43 years. CANHR supports long-term care consumers and the legal services community through direct advocacy, community education, policy work, and litigation. CANHR staff specialize in educating consumers on long term care issues including hospital discharge, nursing home and assisted living facility resident rights, home and community based services, incapacity and conservatorship and Medi-Cal for long term care services.
Alex Morris
Alex has a Master’s degree and is a credentialed gerontologist with 25 years of experience working with individuals and families affected by dementia. She was the director of an assisted living, adult day program, a weekend retreat for brain injured adults and a State Certified Ombudsman. Alex has facilitated an early stage support group, interacting with people living with dementia on a weekly basis for the past 8 years. For 21 years, Alex has provided community and professional education for the Alzheimer's Association of Northern California and is currently a geriatric care manager and dementia consultant.

Learn and practice tools for self-care, including art, identifying coping strategies, and using assistive devices.
